"During the American 'Civil' war,the "Junaluska Zouaves" named after Chief Junaluska (1779 - 1858) were originally organized for state service in September of 1861 as one large company (200-men). The Zouaves continued in their service with the regiment, serving in Tennessee and North Carolina, until lat...e 1863, at which time elements of the regiment were detailed to the Smokey Mountains and to Bristol, Virginia. During this movement the legion was engaged in a skirmish with the Federals on September 7th & 8th, 1863, near Sevierville, Tennessee, and were engaged again in October of 1863 near Greenville, Tennessee, before falling back to Abingdon, Virginia, with the remainder of General John S. Williams command. They were not long there however before they once more moved back into Tennessee with the command, settling into winter quarters near Rogersville, Tennessee, however it was a short lived camp (being there only for one week) before they were once again on the march towards Knoxville, Tennessee, by January of 1864 they were near Russelville, and again returned to Carter's Depot later that month, where they were engaged on April 26th, 1864. Returning to Virginia they were engaged in the actions above Staunton, Virginia, and then in the advance of Major General Jubal Early's command into the Shenandoah Valley, and into Maryland against Washington, D.C., and then the withdraw back into the Valley. The regiment was engaged continuously once they returned to the valley, taking part in several fights (Leetown on August 23rd, Berryville on September 4th, Bunker Hill on September 5th, Opequon on September 10th, Winchester on September 19th, and Cedar Creek on October 19th). Upon reaching Staunton following the long string of battles, the remaining 100 members of the Legion serving with the Army of the Valley were finally ordered to return to North Carolina and join the other elements of the Legion."
