There's a lot of commentary on the southern character circa 1860-1865 there. Haughty, more interested in show than substance; reserving respect for patricians and the elite.

I'm not sure I understand - if anything, this seems to be lauding Johnston's humility and giving a bitter critique of haughty, arrogant officers.
