Need help on finding out my GGG Uncle Joseph Dye Conover was a Civil War soldier. I no very little with the exception he was born Dec.16,1823 and died Feb.23,1875
His wife name was Rebecca Applegate Conover and she died Feb.25,1882
Both are buried at Hamilton Square Baptist Cemetery in Hamilton Square, NJ
They lived in New Jersey.
Thanks.

Hi, Greendoor,

Have you tried using the NPS Civil War Soldier Database? That's always my first stop.

There are a few men with that name, including one from New Jersey. However, it looks like his middle initial might be different from Dye?

Do you know where I might find more definitive info like a widows pension. Maybe she applied for a widows pension since he passed away before her and it would say the date he passed away on the widows pension to verify its him. Maybe someone has access to New Jersey pension records on the forum to look him up. Or maybe someone on the forum has access to the 1890 NJ Veteran census that may list him as a veteran and where he lived. Or someone who has access to Trenton NJ newspapers for Feb.23, 1875 and maybe his obituary says he was a veteran, or her obituary may say she was a member of the Ladies Auxillery of the GAR.
This one may have to go into the mystery pile.
Thanks for your help.

There were two Joseph Conover's from NJ. None have the same middle initial.

Pension-wise, there's a guy from New Jersey with the first and last name, but he didn't die until 1921. There's another one from a U.S. regiment who filed in 1870, but there is no mention of a wife or a location for him.

Are you familiar with Family Search? Unlike some other genealogy sites, you can create an account for free. They have index cards for pensions, so it's a good starting point for finding Union pension information. The cards themselves are on Fold3, which is a paid subscription, but the Family Search material can help you narrow it down! :)
