My grandfather, John Julian Adams served in the navy during what I believe was the 50's. He passed in 2008 and succeded in taking his war secrets with him, he told me his military stories but I can't remeber them. He was from Missouri and I was wondering if anyone served with him, I know this isn't much info, nor is it a civil war question but it means alot to me. So if any one served with a man under this name could you please tell me.He was born in 1934 if that helps any.

This purpose of this web topic is inquiry into service records of Civil War soldiers.

For research on WW2 Veterans, I would recommend you try the forum usmilitariaforum.com . They are good with research and may know of where to search for veterans organization. It may help to know what ship or military unit your grandfather served with. They may help you research that, too. There are a couple of guys on there who have access to naval records and ship logs.

You can try to order his military record summary (DD-214 Record of Separation) from the National Archives using this link: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/
If you can get your parent (the child of John Julian Adams) to order the record as next of kin, you can get the record free and without too many hassles. You might need to provide an obituary or other proof of death for your grandfather. I got my father's record just over a year ago, and he was a Korean War-era Navy veteran, too. The DD-214 provides dates and units of service, list of awards earned, etc. Once you find out on what ships or naval stations he served, you can look for veteran websites for those units and see if you can track down more info.

Good luck with your search.
