Forrest biographer John A. Wyeth was a member of Russell's 4th Tennessee Alabama Cav and was captured in Oct 1863 during Wheeler's raid in the Sequatchie Valley. He wrote his own book, and it's posted online. The story of how he was captured is quite interesting. His buddies figured they would be exchanged within weeks, but Wyeth's records show he was exchanged in Feb 1865 and sent to a Richmond hospital. Seems like a pretty good read.

In one place Wyatt mentioned that volunteers with "long range rifles" were called for to harass some Union cavalry on the other side of a river crossing. This was not long before his capture. He came up with some others and "set my sights to 400 yards." I suppose he just meant standard rifles, as opposed to anything special. He also carried a pistol.
