My Great-great grandmother's brother, Charles Curtis, served in Co. A, 6th Tennessee Cavalry (Federal). He died Aug. 25, 1864 at Jefferson Barracks. He is buried there in Section 8 , #138.

I have 2 questions (most likely I'll have more as I learn more about him!):

1) How do I go about obtaining a photograph of his grave
2) What were the circumstances of his death (was he wounded, if so when/where, or did he die of disease?)

His brothers, William and Henry Curtis, survived the war, as did my Great-great Grandfather, Henry V. Flowers (who would be their brother in law).

All help is appreciated!

Thanks!

WOW!!.....Thanks!!....I tried "Find-A-Grave" before I posted here, but I got no result.....wonder what I did wrong!!.....Now, I have to figure why he was sent to hospital at Jefferson Barracks, instead of one in Tennessee (where the 6th operated)....
I appreciate your help!

Jefferson Barracks became a major hospital complex during the Civil War. The powers to be may have decided to send Charles Curtis to a larger hospital facility in the rear because of his medical condition.

It is ironic that my relation should have passed away like that....In my reenacting unit, I my "First Person" is Albert Sailhorst.....he also died of diarrhea at a hospital in Chattanooga......I can't find his grave (or other biographical information).....My real name is Dave Flowers....
I appreciate the time you took to find that information! :)

I am not an expert on Civil War medicine and terminology. Charles Curtis died from chronic diarrhea and I wonder if it is what we call today ameobic dysentery?

It was probably not unusual to send sick patients to the rear and out of state. Two brothers in my line were sent from Shelbyville to hospitals in Atlanta in 1863. They were returned to the AOT just in time for the great retreat to Chattanooga and were left behind on the march, too sick to keep up. Both were captured in their home county.
