This is not my relative (that I know of anyway) but when I was photographing headstones in a small family cemetery in Fishers, Hamilton County, Indiana, I found the Civil War marker for this young man. I have posted the headstone and cemetery on Findagrave.com but would like to try and fill in some background n him if possible.

All I can find so far is that the 39th formed on 8-29-1861 at Indianapolis and became the 8th Indiana Cavalry 10-15-1863, mustered out 7-20-1865. The 39th lost 250 to sickness and I think 189 in battle.

I located a James Pane from Hamilton County, joined Aug 29 (1861) and deserted Sep __ 1862.

I don't show other records yet but thought I'd keep poking around and see if anyone had resources to locate more.

Thanks!

There's this, from the Indiana State Archives:

James Payne - Civil War
Record Series: Military Records
Collection: Civil War
County: Statewide

Referencenumber: CIV145515
Accession Number: 1938001
Party: Name
Age: 29
Date Enrolled: 1861/08/28
Where Enrolled: Indianapolis, Indiana
Regiment: 39
Company: E
Discharge Date: 1862/09/01
Notes: Deserted at Tyre Springs, TN. 9/1/62.
Cavalry/ Battery Unit: 8th Cavalry
Name: James Payne
Party Type: Name

The reference to his deserting is likely incorrect; I've seen lots of men so listed in their records, who later turn up again with their regiments without any further notation, as if it never happened. I gather the desertion charge got sorted out, because he did later receive a pension listing service in the 39th Infantry/8th Cavalry, plus the 124th Indiana.

Oh thanks so much! When I was browsing the regiment rolls, I saw a few others marked deserter in Sept 1862. Possibly a few were separated from their company at the same time and may have caught up later? Ahh, mystery! Fun!

One record spells his name PANE the other is spelled PAYNE. This matches what Andy found on his pension. Different residences though ????

Marion County is next to Hamilton I believe. I have 2 histories of Hamilton County and will check to see if there are any references to a Payne or Pane family. I may also check the census records and see if there was a James Payne/Pane in both counties or if part of one county was consolidated into another....possibly he had a cousin, my ancestors had an annoying habit of using the same names over and over...it's a different "pain" to sort through!
