Water! water! The Union wounded cried out for water again and again in the Virginia June heat amid screams of agonizing pain.

These soldiers were among some 7,000 Union dead and wounded lying in the "no man's land" between the Confederate and Union lines at Cold Harbor, Va. They were consequences of yet another failed frontal assault of the Civil War on a defensive line. In June 1864, Cold Harbor was among the last of a series of vicious battles of Grant's Virginia Overland Campaign against Lee.
