J. Marshall Crawford

I have been unable to find birth and death dates for Sgt. John Marshall Crawford of Companies A & B, 43rd. Battalion, Virginia Cavalry. He authored MOSBY AND HIS MEN in 1867. Can anyone provide his birth and death dates ? Even just the years would be appreciated.
His service record:

Do you know if he resettled in California after the war? I believe I found him in Truckee, Nevada, California on a voter registrar. I had a Confederate relative from North Carolina settled in the same location. Dated October 1876. His age is listed at 40 if it's the same man.

My relative, Jordan Livingston, a Veteran of the 11th NC. This area may have been a haven for former Confederates.

Some fragments of information found are:

. In his written work, 'Mosby and his Men', Crawford states (at page 14) that he held office in the U.S. Treasury Dept. at Washington D.C. for seven years prior to 1861 (meaning he must have started working there around 1853).

. In his same work, Crawford mentions (at page 95) that his native state was Virginia.

. In another work, 'Mosby's Rangers', author James Williamson does not show his name being recorded as present at the Second Reunion of the unit at Marshall (Old Salem) on Aug. 14, 1895, nor is he listed as a known surviving member of the unit at the time.

Piecing together these bits, best guess is that he was born circa 1835 (or earlier), possibly in Virginia, and that he may have died prior to 1895, although he could have just disappeared at this time.
