Just started to redraw this vessel. from a sketch of her in action with USS Kinsman and two other vessels.
She is behind two trees unfortunately, Does anyone know of or have a clear sketch of her ?

Hi Rebel, there is a very clear illustration of the bow, forward guns and forward rail-road iron shield of the J.A. Cotton that appeared in a contemporary magazine. It depicts Union snipers picking off the Cotton's gun crews. This sketch appears to match a pre-war sketch (side-view) of the Cotton underway.

Hi Georgew. I haven't seen that one ,I have the illustration from University of Wisconsin.
 
That UW image is interesting. It shows a feature I don't think I've seen before, the boiler deck extended forward all the way to the jackstaff at the stem -- that's very odd.
