Businesses don't like negative reviews. I've had good results on more than one occasion with response from different businesses after leaving bad reviews. Looks like there is a local Chamber of Commerce website in his area where you can leave a review. Yelp is another possibility. Leave a review on every site you can find. I've had best response to those left on the Better Business website. You may be able to leave one there even if he is not a member. You can't get into trouble for stating the facts of the situation. "Sold me a sword. When told by multiple experts in the Civil War collecting community that the sword was not what seller claimed it to be, changed his story about the sword multiple times. Said he would give me a refund, but never has. Now he won't even answer my phone calls. I will never do business with him and caution all others."

I think slander is usually understood to mean something spoken out loud, whereas something written would be libel. I'm not really qualified to give legal advice -- just repeating what my lawyer told me some time ago. Slander is probably more difficult to prove, but with libel the injured party would have something written to produce as evidence. Unless you have deep pockets, it does seem less likely that someone would come after you in a civil suit for libel -- but isn't libel actually a crime in some states, with jail time or fines possible?

I think you are correct. As I said, I'm not an attorney. The point is not to publicly accuse someone of something you cannot prove to be true. Facts and opinions are different beasts.

I've tried but I have his cell number but he won't return my calls. I've only called him twice but after I heard what he was saying in the background I stopped

I'm not gonna go that far I'm actually not even mad about the sword I think it's cool and it could have possibly been imported to the us. What I am mad about is the fact he lied and changed his story 5 times about it. First it was pre civil war then it was a non reg sword to a union word, to a confederate sword, to a French import. I really want everyone to be aware of this scum bag and if a refund can be set up I'll definitely take it

You are on safe ground if you confine yourself to only making factual statements. Strongly suggest that you do not publicly accuse anyone or state opinions about that specific person that might disparage their reputation in the eyes of others (because of the possible legal implications).

If you have reached an impasse in your dealings, you could perhaps post a business review that ends with, ...'I would not recommend this business to others based on my actual experiences with them'... This is factual, gets your point across and could help others.

Agree with this suggestion. In any buyer's dispute with a seller, it's always preferable to firstly try and resolve it between the parties amicably (if possible). And always keep a record of any dealings, just in case.

So many of y'all know I bought a mis represented artillery sword at the Southaven show. I bought it from a guy who runs trimbles tavern and he lied and said he would be at the Corinth show to give me a refund. I called him yesterday to confirm but he he did not answer. I called him today and he answered but I heard a lot of background noise, then I heard him talking. He said do not answer the phone from an Oxford Mississippi number it's a kid that bought a sword from and some a**s holes who don't know what they are talking about told him it has nothing to do with the civil war. Then it went silent then hung up. Im guessing I was not supposed to hear that but looks like I'm not getting a refund any time soon. If anyone is willing to help me work something out with this scammer please dm me. I would like all collectors to know what he has done to me. I have his personal phone number and his stores number. How do I know I'm not getting a refund? I called him with a different phone that has a different area code and he said that he would not be at the Corinth show

The only thing I would add to the other comments is if you happened to use a credit card for payment you should be able to file a complaint and your credit card company will investigate the facts. I have successfully used this method and won a complete refund on a fraudulent Colt. Best of luck.

The truth is considered to be an adequate defense against a charge of slander or libel.
Calling someone a "crook" and a "lying sob" is a matter of opinion.
I don't think anyone has ever been actually charged with, much less convicted of either.
