Why were so many of the early abolitionists women? I cannot help but notice that many of these female abolitionists were also feminists or suffragettes. So many of the early antislavery societies were founded by women who were also suffragettes or feminists that I think a link could be made. This is but a short list of abolitionists who were also feminists or suffragettes: Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Lucretia Coffin Mott, Sarah Pugh, Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock Jones. Sarah Grimke, Mary Grew, and Elizabeth Buffum Chace. I could add a few more but I think I have made my point

A working theory is that because they themselves were denied some rights, they were quicker to see the denial of rights for blacks as being wrong than were their male counterparts. I also have seen that many of the female abolitionists were also teachers. Maybe there is a link between education and abolitionism
