When the Civil War ended the U.S. Army had huge numbers of unissued uniforms. The Army did not simply discard them but issued then in the 1866--1871 period. when we are asked to ID a uniform, how do we know it is not one of these post Civil War issued uniforms? The truth is if they were left un altered we can simply not tell. For example in 1866 there were 1,388,645 sack coats in storage. That is a whole lot of sack coats. This book shows the most common post war conversions of Union frock coats, shell jackets and sack coats. Although other books discuss some of the conversions this is one of the few books that list the most common field conversions.
