'Glory' is a war drama that tells the story of a group of brave men who decided to undertake a seemingly impossible task and gave their all to it despite knowing that they will most probably fail. Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman, the Academy Award-winning film focuses on a regiment of African-American soldiers serving during the Civil War. Several years after Glory was released I remember the director saying he tried very hard to be as accurate as possible, but he had deliberately taken liberties with two scenes in the movie. Firstly, because of sunlight he had the 54th Mass.'s charge proceed from north to south i.e., with the Atlantic Ocean on it's left, when in fact the charge was south to north. Secondly, and more interesting, he had Col. Robert Shaw meet his instant death at the base of Battery Wagner very near the moat area when in fact Shaw made it up onto the parapets. The director claimed he felt that the truth of Shaw falling in the parapet area would have been too dramatic for the audience to believe, hence his choice of location for Shaw to expire. Glory, in my mind, is the best Civil War movie to have ever been produced.
