Speaking of Jefferson Davis. He was born in Fairview,KY on this day in 1808 but Irwinville,Georgia was also a significant place in his life. It is the site of Jefferson Davis Memorial State Historic Site.

The nearest town is actually Fitzgerald,GA and that's the town name on it's address. Irwinville is an "unincorporated community". As far as I know,it was called Irwinville when Jefferson Davis was captured there on May 10,1865. Site website:

I actually visited there on Saturday morning,June 23,2018 during my yearly late June roadtrip. Got real busy afterward and never got around to posting about it. I found a few short threads on it here in CWT. Seems appropriate to post mine now.

As @donna posted above,it is remotely located. Guess that's why Jeff Davis thought it was safe. :D The museum is a one-room museum but there is quite a bit in there. The gift shop was outta everything so I didn't get any souvenirs. The gentleman on duty told me that funding for renovations had been appropriated and work was supposed to begin about 6 months later. Don't know if that has happened or not. Admission is $4.00 per adults and worth every bit of it. The Historic Site is on the Georgia State Parks website, but on the historic site's page it says: "This property is managed by Irwin County."

This has been on our radar since planning this years trip to the CWT Vicksburg meet-up, but as it's only open Weds thru Sat looks like we'll need to spend an extra day in Savannah and Ft Pulaski whilst waiting for it to open .

I'll let you know in October.

That being the case.I'm not gonna post all my photos. I'll leave something for the imagination to you.
