Hello, I have been doing a vast genealogy project for the last year or so. I have not been all that surprised to find many CSA soldiers in my father's line, but was much more surprised to find quite a few Union soldiers on both sides of my family.

To start somewhere I'm looking for deeper information about Capt John W. Bell of the 32nd Alabama Infantry Regiment.

There are quite a few more people on my list, but I'm pretty sure that it would be rude to just list them here.

In any case, I await with interest the pleasure of talking with others who have interest in this period.

I went on Fold3 to look up your ancestor and I found a Capt. John W. Bell in Company H of the 32nd Alabama Infantry. He enlisted in 1862 and served in the Army of the Tennessee until his death from disease on February 14, 1864 at Cassville, Georgia. His physical description was hard to read but I did make out that he was six feet tall with blue eyes. Fold3 also has records about requisitions he made while he was in service and he had $ 120.00 in money on him that was to be sent to his family after his death.

Welcome to the forum! I'm sure you will find members here who can and will help you with your ancestor searches.

Welcome,

You will find lots of great people here, who are very knowledgeable and helpful about the many areas of the Civil War.

Thank you so much for the link. I don't know why I hadn't thought of searching that particular database, but I hadn't. I know that there are letters of his around someplace. I'll have to find out where they are housed.
You're welcome. Good luck with your search.

Welcome.
Feel free to post more inquiries in the category Researching Your Ancestors. Once you identify a unit and dates of his service, there will likely be someone here who had a relative in the same unit and they can tell you the battles tgey fought in.

Wow, thank you so very much for that. I haven't ponied up the dough yet for Fold3, but it looks like I really should. Again, I'm flabbergasted by your generosity.
