Emerging civil war had a great post up today about upcoming events this spring at Gettysburg institute, uva, Virginia tech and others. I personally signed up for the April 20 event at uva. It is a 1 day conference on second Manassas and includes Gary Gallagher, Caroline Janney and John Hennessey and others! And it's free. Here's the full list ecw had

Hello from the UVA civil war conference. We're on lunch break coming off a top notch as usual talk by the legend Gary Gallgher. John Hennessey is next up

I am back home after a long day driving to Hooville and back.

So I was wondering why they were doing a conference on Second Manassas in 2024 and the answer was given in the introduction to the day. Gary Gallaghter used to be the editor of a series of books that were published and would have a wide array of essays by various authors about a specific battle or campaign. When Gary retired he stepped away from that series and it went dormant. 2 of Garys former students, Caroline Janney and KT Shively are reviving it as co editors, and the first one is on Second Manassas. It should be out spring 2025. Today was a chance for some of the authors to workshop their essays and give us a hint as to what is to come. Here is a link to the old ones. I highly recommend them as they cover all aspects of the campaign they cover and are a nice, concise read.

John Hennessey spoke after lunch. He talked about how his campaign study on second manassas made no mention of the enslaved when he wrote it 30 years ago and no scholarly feedback he got mentioned it either. Today he said he couldn't write that book without mentioning it, and it wouldn't withstand peer review without.

I was fascinated by the picture of enslaved crossing the Rappahannock which is the last picture. John had first hand accounts from Union soldiers that witnessed this crossing. This was Pope's army as it withdrew north out of Culpeper and crossed the Rappahannock. In the background is the railroad bridge at Rappahannock Station. The army used that, the enslaved were not allowed to, so they used the ford just downriver to follow the army and the opportunity to be free.

Don't let the title deceive you. Dr. Janney was the last speaker of the day but this is nothing to do with current monument removal. She told the story of the original 2 markers that were placed on Henry House Hill and at Groveton by union soliders in May 1865. The narrative contained information about the federal government didnt want to spend money to maintain the 2 monuments because they didn't own the land. A confederate park was opened in the early 1900s and started buying up land, and eventually in 1940 that becomes the park we know now as Manassas.

Intersting note, and someone asked, Manassas is the southern name for the battles. All the other military parks we could think of when there were 2 name options, always used the Union name. But not Manassas. Her essay will be a super interesting read based on the talk she gave.

Last note, all of the talks were filmed for CSPAN so we should see some/all of the in the future @JerseyBart

For years, my father attended a weeklong conference at Virginia Tech and went on some great battlefield tours. I think the conferences were run by Bud Robertson but I don't remember for sure.

I always wanted to go on one of those conferences. They were called Campaigning with Lee and I heard a lot of good things about them. I regret that I never attended one!
