I have two ancestors that I am researching. I have some good basic info on them but would like to get into some neat details as far as i can go.
1. George Schnabel - 3rd Great Grandfather. Born 7/11/1811 in Germany. Arrived in US on Dec. 5, 1834 in New York. Died Jan. 29, 1897. Private Co. D 6th Indiana Enrolled Sept. 30 1861 from Madison Indiana. Fought at Shiloh then was Discharged under Certificate of Disability on July 2, 1862.

2. Peter Schnabel - 2nd Great-Grand Uncle. Born 1843 not sure where. Died Jan. 6, 1904 in San francisco. Private Co. B 32nd Indiana. Enrollment Aug. 24, 1861 from Madison Indiana. According to his Pension Taken Prisoner at Chickamauga Sept. 19, 1863, Confined at Richmond Sept 29, 1863. Confined at Danville VA. Dec. 12, 1863. Deserted? Feb 18, 1864. Admitted to Hospital at Danville June 6, 1864- Variola Ward. Removed from Variola Ward June 22. Confined at Andersonville GA. date not given. Paroled at Savannah GA. Nov. 19, 1864.

I would really like to find a picture of them or their respective regiments. That would make my day. On Peter I was wondering if their are any prisoner of war records I could find from the various POW camps he was confined to and any record or his parole. Of course any other info about them or regiments would be awesome. Thanks Whitey

Pictures are the holy grail for many of us. For photos of individuals, the likeliest sources are descendants. I looked briefly at Ancestry. There are some good trees with multiple records; none had photos. That doesn't mean they aren't out there. For military photos local historical societies are great places to try. Most companies came from the same locality and so if a photo was made it likely would have come home to someone in the same community. It looks like Jefferson County, where Madison is, has a lot of groups doing local history. The History Center has a research library with a large collection of photographs - you might try them (if you haven't already)

The Indiana Archives has a very nice website for their collection. I didn't turn anything up with a quick search but a more detailed search might. The non-digitized records may have something also.

As to prison records, you may want to start a thread just on that in the Civil War prisons forum - that's where the experts on that topic hang out! https://civilwartalk.com/forums/civil-war-prisons.292/

For pictures, you might also check to see if their units have a re-enactors' group. I've found that such groups are quite knowledgeable about the men who served in that unit.

@lupaglupa has given you good advice. Finding images of specific individuals could take decades and if you are lucky you might find a photo. Finding a regimental photo is a difficult task and a company photo even more so. Unit histories are another place to find photos. Unfortunately I don't think there are many published works on either the 6th Indiana or 32nd Indiana.

As a long shot you might try the Library of Congress collection or the Military Images magazine index. There are collectors who strictly collect Indiana Images.

I wish you the best of luck in your quest.
