I see the memoriam dates from 1870, the year of Lee's death. You would have thought the creators would have known that Lee's birthday was January the 19th and not January 6th. In North Carolina, Lee's birthday is one of three days that the First National flag flies over the state capitol in Raleigh. The other two days are Confederate Flag Day in March and 10 May-- Confederate Memorial Day .

Yeah, he was born in 1807, also. I didn't know about First National flag flying in NC. Thanks for the post!

Wait...there is some foofoo over this birthdate. Let me go get my copy of Pryor. She explains it, I think.

Okay--on pg. 14 of my copy, it is given as Jan. 19, 1807, as you've noted. However, Lee himself writes Feb. 28, 1824 in a letter to West Point: "I completed my 18th year on the 29th of last January...." Well, that would be 1806...which is wrong.

And Jan. 29 is his father's birthday. Whoa......is that a Freudian slip, or what?

Who can blame someone for being confused? :bounce: But where they got 1808 is beyond me.
