Illinois Memorial

[JPK Huson 1863]

Thanks for this thread. It isn't Vicksburg, going a little off thread, these just always make me think of the men who lay scattered through the war, en route to Vicksburg, then those that fell later. JPK's brother Samuel , Illinois soldier whose regiment went on to Vicksburg fell at Shiloh, in the first wave through camp.

Aw. This man plays Ashokan Farewell at the Memorial. His video description says,

"But I wanted to play there in memory of my wife's great-great grandfather, Private (later Lieutenant) Silas Polley, 14th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, who was present at the battle."

Samuel Huson was with the 14th Illinois, too. This is where these are so valuable, regiments recreated- who went on to Vicksburg, then who went on after that. Who lies buried. Gives you chills.

Don't be so sure. The person in the pic gives the immense size of the monument some perspective. There is good and bad. ;-)

Mine is cropped and I fiddled with the brightness and contrast a bit..but I agree with Discipulus the tourist provides the scale in your picture....

It is interesting that if you compare the two pictures...we had to almost be standing in the exact same spot.......

I had three ancestors in the 33rd Illinois and one in the 26th Illinois whose names are in bronze inside that building.

<-- Capt. Harvey J. Dutton of Co. A, 33rd Illinois. My 2xg-uncle. At Vicksburg he was a 1st Lieutenant and was wounded.

I get goosebumps seeing this memorial.

Have you ever been to this memorial? If not, I hope someday you do get to see it in person.
