Recent Find Identifying military uniform button

Hello! We were metal detecting on our new property which we knew was a convent originating in 1873, but we found this button. From what I can tell it may be pre-Civil War. The back states: SCOLVILLE.MG.CO

Also, any tips for cleaning it?

Nice find. Its a US Army general service button. With that back-mark it dates to the 1850's as far as cleaning. LEAVE IT AS FOUND
