Interestingly (I thought), in that same moment, the horse is disturbed and distracted in a different direction to where the stern looking sergeant is focused in a state of primed readiness (with his pistol pointed, alert to an unknown possible danger, but without sensing it sufficient to have the hammer cocked on his revolver).
