How-To Thread: Fold3

Great informative thread Zella.

I like Fold3. I have recovered some amazing documents for family members. Besides the obvious muster rolls, I've found: Pensions, pay vouchers, letters, draft cards, amnesty oaths, pardon requests, etc.

I found a 3 page hand written pardon request to President Andrew Johnson from a GG Grandfather dated August 1865.

I only have one set of documents cooler, & that's because they are originals. I have 3 original enlistment docs from my G Grandfather who served in the Sp Am War. The enlistment docs I have are dated 1898, 1901, & 1903.

Thank you, @Viper21 ! I've found some really cool stuff on there, too. One of my ancestors was a company officer, and it was cool to see supply orders demanding shoes in his handwriting. There was also vague mention of him being confined for an arrest, but sadly no more detail on that. LOL

And that's really cool about the documents! I don't think anyone in my family has anything like that, which is a shame.

That's a good question, Laura. Truthfully, I don't like the search function on there at all. I've had folks tell me they have good luck with it, but it often does not pick up people I know are there or it doesn't give the right person as the first result. That's why my preference is to go in there knowing who I am looking for and their regiment and using the browse feature if at all possible.

Maybe some of our other folks who use it have some ideas?

Hi,
Have found fold3 to be invaluable in many ways through the years. Here is something I stumbled on today, which I believe is in Beta phrase. Sure hope they keep it. Excuse poor resolution but hope you can see enough to use. I picked the battle, the regiment, etc. at random.
I have tried to describe this feature graphically, versus trying to explain it in writing. This is a drill-down feature.
I first noticed "CW Stories", as circled in first portion. Follow the black circles and explore the features:

Glad this thread got some renewed activity. Yesterday, I got an email from fold3 for 40% off an annual subscription and I renewed my subscription after not subscribing for 2-3 years. I had been waiting for a sale to renew. My pandemic restricted travel cemetery visits made me yearn for access to more information about soldiers who I have been finding in the cemeteries. Researched a couple yesterday evening and all I was able to find was a headstone application for one, which was kinda disappointing.

We have a couple of threads about this new feature. Curious to see how it turns out, but I am very pleased they now have a link to make corrections but they still need to make corrections for what I submitted to them.

Uhg....they will let you submit feedback only once. I was going to give them the dates of the rest of the named engagements that they were missing. :frown:
