Most every night while in the White House, President Obama has ten letters included in his nightly briefing folder. He reads them all, sends handwritten replies to a few (including a few personal checks) and forwards some for action by a government agency.

Thousands of letters arrive each day and he sees only a tiny sample, but this nightly ritual continuing for so long is not a common practice for presidents.

An interesting story.
