How many books?

Was having a conversation with a friend of mine and we were discussing how many books we read at one time; we was a guy who can't read more than one because it would confuse him he says. I have four going right now and have at times had more. I just find that sometimes I need to just change gears in the middle of a book and start reading other things. Curious as to how many you guys normally have going at a time?

To just add to the discussion I am currently reading Grant and Sherman: the Friendship that won the Civil War by Charles Flood, The Man Who Saved the Union by HW Brand, Lincoln and the Power of the Press by Harold Holzer and Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose.

I normally have three books ongoing at any point. Now I have a historical fiction novel, No. 3 in Griff Hosker's Lucky Jack series, Churchill & Sea Power and am rereading Rags and Hope.

I most often have three going. I've got a number of CW books that I have yet to read so those get rotated in when I finish one. I like to have several types of things to read at hand as I'm not always in the mood for one genre. I also have three magazine subscriptions so might have one or two of those also. And then there's stuff I download and print out. And ... did I mention that I read a lot ?

I would say 2 to 3 books, several cookbooks or books about food, the newspaper everyday, several magazines each day, and looking up things on internet, copying and reading them.

Doing some summertime reading now. I tend to read books out of the ordinary this time of year. Have three books going now: Huckleberry Finn, Robinson Crusoe, and Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.

I am one of those poor souls who only ever reads one book at a time. Reading a book is like drinking a cocktail - it's not a good idea to mix them up.

I respect where you are coming from, but I have to have multiple books going because I just love to jump around and read constantly. I am also practicing on a speed reading technique that has really come in handy with this.

For the most part 2 but I guess you could say 3 because sometimes I'll keep one in the ... "reading room" (-;
At this time I'm reading 2 " Five Families" " The Rise, Decline, and Resurgence of America's Most Powerful Mafia Empires" by Selwyn Rabb. I am a BIG reader of organized crime . I own more books about the Mafia, than any other subject.

The other book is " Saloons of the Old West" by Richard Erdoes.

It really depends on what I'm reading. I usually try to read as many as possible so long as its one general subject. Take last weekend. I read read 2 books on Augustus, while I listened to another on CD. I can keep the names and dates, and places right. I also always takes notes when I read

I usually read one book at a time because my mind photographs better that way. Because books were rare when I was coming up, I learned to memorize them. Having more than one at a time disrupts that. The upside - I read very fast! That was another trick I learned early - having limited time with what books were available.

I have in the past read 3 or 4 books at once, but now that im retired I like to not rush and enjoy things at a slower pace, so I just read one at a time. Now Im reading "The Gettysburg Campaign, A Study in Command" by Coddington.

Started reading Gettysburg the Last Invasion by Allen C. Guelzo last December 2013.
Now starting chapter 10.

I love this thread! I usually read 2-3 books at a time. Right now, I'm working on the Shelby Foote trilogy and reading Don't Hurry Me Down to Hades. Sometimes I throw in another non-Civil War book that my friends and I are reading together. It's like watching different tv shows. =)

I would love to have people in my personal life that had the same reading passion I do; the only sharing about reading I get to do is on here and other forums lol

I can't say that my friends and I read academic books but it's nice! Lol
When it comes to books on history, I'm glad I found this site too.

Started reading Gettysburg the Last Invasion by Allen C. Guelzo last December 2013.

I always thought Jubal Early would be a bit irritated by the title of that book.

Only ever intend to read 1. It usually ends up being 2-3, though. I at least try to make sure they don't cross over. My recent has been reading a book about William Wallace, the 11th Virginia Cavalry, a fictional fantasy book called the Furies of Calderon and a book for my couple's Bible study group.
