How is this historically accurate?

But it looks like the lube groove is missing against the original design...What's going on here?
Well, I have a relic .36 tear-drop bullet that is smaller than this one and no lube groove and no base like that one.



Notice on the other page of your link it shows his newly molded bullets are displayed next to a relic bullet— but not that odd round.

How does the bullet get any lube? These were just shoved in, capped, and fired right?
The term "lube" is a colloquial term for the glue or adhesive that was used. It wasn't lubrication or gun oil. It more references the lesser diameter on that portion of the projectile that would allow it to seat and not cause an issue of the paper fouling the projectile in the cylinder upon firing.

The lube groove has nothing to do with lube. There needs to be a smaller diameter on the bullet for the paper casing to be glued to in order to prevent the paper from increasing the bullets actual outer diameter. The OD or ogive needs to be tight to the bore diameter to achieve its best muzzle velocity. The lube groove is just a term for this smaller neck at the base of the projectile.

Edit: I'm wrong. To prove how incredibly ignorant I was... here is a link to the patent for "Ballistic lubricating grease, ammunition and process" which mentions missiles. Man... I love learning. Thank you @Stopsign32v for the opportunity to learn!

So how did they avoid leading and black powder issues?
 
Bullets only were dipped in lube. Black powder fouling is it's own issue to debate as relates to repeated firing. Colts fire longer than Remingtons before becoming too fouled to use in my shooting experience. I decide when to stop shooting a Colt, my Remingtons decide for me. After firing a couple of cylinders the Remington's cylinder starts to bind and you wind up bending the hand spring trying to cock it after the cylinder starts getting difficult to rotate. YMMV

Thank you & I stand corrected. What was the lube they would dip the projectiles into? Tallow or something of the like?
 
Only the bullet portion is dipped. Lubricant that has soaked the paper can be detrimental to the powder charge contained within, reducing it's power or even preventing ignition. Read "The English Cartridge" for an education on paper cartridge problems and development of the ultimate paper cartridge, the Enfield cartridge. YMMV

I understand the Enfield cartridge. Is it referenced in that book about the revolver cartridge practices in the states?
