With eloquence mixed with moral indignation and a large dose of denial and an overwhelming belief in superiority and privilege.
I hope we dig into this topic as IMO this statement signed by 96 clergymen exposes the deeply rooted convictions of the Southern slave owners and their beliefs and justifications.

 
I'm not sure that it was only the southern clergy (and non-clergy) who reacted similarly. There were lots of folks in the North who felt the same way toward blacks.
