Kevin Costner, now done with Yellowstone, is releasing a two-part Western, including a Civil War setting, in theaters for two parts: June 28 and August 16. It's plot is this generic IMDB description:

"Chronicles a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre-and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American west."

Here's the trailer:

The fact that a huge, multipart expensive Western-combine-CW-movie is coming out is making me somersault in joy. The genre is making a comeback, especially good for my generation, Z, which is in the post-Western age.

I had not watched the trailer when writing this, so now I'll react to that:

Most excited I've been about a trailer since the Star Wars days last decade. Beautifully authentic-looking. Watch that with earbuds, like I did; I got the movie theater experience.

I was watching a trailer and spotted this:

Looks like Kevin Costner is in the Civil War-era army again! Dances With Wolves fans know he did it well in that film. What that means and how it'll factor into the story have yet to be seen. But I am super excited about this movie.

Thanks for posting the trailer. I like westerns, anyway, and will watch this for sure.

I'm not sure what to make of Horizons.

There are two parts coming out this year, and a further two planned. The trailer feels like it might just be too sprawling of an epic for it's own good. Especially since it seems like it's going to try to encompass everyone's perspective. It will certainly be interesting to see how it pans out.

Costner is a passionate filmmaker, especially about the West, but his filmography has its ups and downs. He's also coming off Yellowstone, a show with a fascinating plot, but wall to wall unlikable characters and a lot of questionable...values. I know it wasn't his show - he was just the star protagonist - but it taints him nonetheless.

Dances With Wolves portrayed the Pawnees harshly, but its enjoyable just as a movie. I trust Costner to nail it. I still love Open Range.

Open Range is good. As for "nailing it" in Horizon, I'm undecided. Open Range was a pretty tight story to script, direct, and film. And making Robert Duvall a major part of the mix was a "no brainer" for any director. This one is a lot broader and seems like it could get into areas that might be harder to portray. Lest we forget, there was The Postman ...

It's kind of like if Sons of Anarchy was set on a ranch.
Actually, that's an idea - work in a motorcycle club. Can't get worse IMHO. I started watching it mostly because they began filming in an area where I worked one summer in college and near where I hang out quite a bit. But I pretty much bagged out because the characters are a bunch of foul-mouthed losers - again IMHO.
