Horace Lawson Hunley,the man who conceived and developed the C.S.S H.L.Hunley submarine was born on this day in 1823. Everybody tip yer hats and give him a SALL UTEE today on his birthday!

wasnt Hunley the main financier and James McClintock the main designer.

also, according to a story written in 1902 by Lt Alexander who was a confederate engineer assigned to the project, he claims that the hunley, not yet named that, sunk because of serious errors made by Hunley. Alexander and another engineer, Dixon, helped salvage the craft and concluded there was nothing found on the sub indicating a reason for its sinking, other than a open sea hatch.

It's my understanding that Hunley was an organizer and financier rather than an engineer, but that shouldn't take anything away from him... especially as he was willing to bet his life on the invention (and did... and lost, unfortunately).

I'll salute Hunley and all others like him (Bushnell, Fulton, Villeroi, Holland, etc) who helped develop the submarine. Without them, I wouldn't have my career in antisubmarine warfare.

Hunley was one several Confederates to have a US Navy warship named for him, appropriately a submarine tender. I don't know if she ever served the USS Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson, two of the "Famous American" named Polaris missile submarines.
