Hood's Minstrels. A performing troupe of regular soldiers in General John B. Hood's Confederate army. One of their best shows occurred on April 15, 1864, while in camp in east Tennessee. The stage was built of planks used to ship horses by train, the back scenery was tent material, and the footlights were candles screened by a board that served as a reflection. Soldiers gathered in "standing seats" and Hood's Minstrels performed their black-faced show, which included the farce "Lucy Long", the song "Fine Arkansas Gentleman" and a skit. "P.T. Barnum's Ball".
