I thought the same thing, and imagine most of them would have been pretty raggedy and dirty at that stage.

At the same time, it's a poignant image of men walking away from the final battle and heading homewards.

Yes, it's a nice image. It reminds me of many of the country roads here in my home county in central Missouri. It's very evocative.
