Im not sure what room or forum this belongs to, plz direct me to the right place, if incorrect.
First: Is this item from the same time period as CW?
Second: Tell me about the knife if CW related.
It used to have a flat piece on the end that looked almost like a penny, but flatter and smoother than a penny.

I am not a knife expert at all ... but I have inherited a few old family homemade knives.
And I also collect antique pocket knives.

My guess is your knife is a hand crafted kitchen/utility knife. A rustic bread knife perhaps ?
It does not look military to me.

And I agree with @Conquerordie , it also looks a bit modern to be from the Civil War era.

But again, I'm not qualified to answer your question.
I hope some of our experts can help.

Lady Spitfire, I always tell my greats & grands that there is only one dumb question, the one you did not ask. I am a blacksmith & have comrades who are highly skilled knifesmiths. The number of blacksmith knives of all skill levels that are knocked out every year is impossible to exaggerate.

In this case, there is no attempt to deceive. It is an honest attempt by a not very skilled person. You did exactly the right thing by asking.

Just for comparison, I am familiar with this smith's work. The link has images of a selection of his blades. That will give you something to compare with should you have another opprotunity. Fair warning, these knives are really nice. See more here.

This is an English Bowie knife from the wreck of the blockade runner Modern Greece. Gives you an idea of what period knives actually looked like.

The Modern Greece sank in shallow water near Fort Fisher, was covered over with silt & excavated in the 1970's. The remarkable preservation of the thousands of objects in her hold are window into what amounts to a Civil War department store. Enjoy, read more here.
