Col. of 33rd North Carolina, New Berne, Peninsula, August 1862 Col. of 21st North Carolina, Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, commanded Trimble's Bde/Ewell's Divn at Fredericksburg, January 1863 Brig. Gen., commanded Hoke's Bde/Early's Divn at Chancellorsville (w), attacked the Plymouth NC garrison, April 1864 Maj. Gen., commanded Hoke's Divn under Beauregard at Petersburg, Fort Fisher, Bentonville.
Post War Career Private business, railroad director.
