Hello, My name is Kimberly. My GGGG Grandfather (my dads mothers side) was a Confederate soldier Company K, Texas 3rd Infantry Regiment. My GGG Grandfather on my dads fathers side, was in the 23rd Ill Infantry Mulligan's Brigade for the North. I am searching for any photos and or stories I can get my hands on. I have found some stories but I have no photos. I have several other family members that were on both sides and in fact my my GGG Grandfather was shot at Harper's Ferry by a minni ball in the arm and thigh, and died a few years later from complications of his injuries. His wife then married again, to a retired soldier, and I believe that soldier had fought for the other side. To me that is funny. Family names in Texas are: Magnus (conf. soldier), Koether, Wahl, and Dorow. Family name in Ill, Ohio, WV and Nebraska are Higginson (union soldier), Shepard, and Hedrick.

I am also interested in my husbands line. His is in Kentucky mainly, and some in Tenn. Those names are Ashcraft, Marion, Plowman, Estes, Angel, and Mckinney for now.

Thanks!

Welcome from the Old Bay State.

Here are the Rosters of the Irish 23rd Illinois. You have to check all possible names in each of the Companies ''' and hope one of them is yours! There seems to be only one Higginson, John of Co. A (he was from Detroit, Mich. -- the 23rd had men from several western states). But there are scads of Shepard/Sheperd/sometimes with a -ph-/sometimes with double p's -- so you'll really have to pin down a first name.

Good luck in your searches. If you can pin down full names and places, I'm sure you'll get a lot of help here.

PS: One member of my family, born in Maine, moved to Miss. before the war, and served in the Confederate army. After the war, he went back to Maine and married his childhood sweetheart, who was widow of a Union soldier who had been killed at a battle my relative had fought in, on the other side. There are, indeed, strange stories to be told.

Who was your Third Texas ancestor, please? Do you have his service record?
Here are three possibilities for the "Magnus" 3d TX ancestor:
Magnus, Johan Peter Co K 3rd TX Inf
Magnus, T P Co K 3rd TX Inf (probably the same man as above)
Magnes, John E Co B 3rd TX Cav (South Kansas-Texas Mounted Vols)

And a handful of "Cothers" (not "Koether" but spelling wasnt a strong suit for records) some from AL/MS and could have wound up in TX and one from TX:
Cother, W A Co G 40th AL Inf
Cother, B F Co A 3d Battalion MS Inf
Cother, M H Co G 12th MS Cav
Cother, W B Co G 12th MS Cav
Cother, John R 1st Battn TX Sharpshooters
