I recently visited several historical sites while on vacation and thought I would share some of the pictures.
This will be based on the theme of…. beds….

First image is of the actual bed that President Lincoln died in. It is now located at the Chicago History Museum. The display is very nice but misleading as to the actual size of the room at the Petersen House.

Second image is a series of images that I pasted together. These were taken at the Petersen House. As you can see the bedroom area is very small. The bed at the Petersen House is a replica of the original bed in Chicago.

The next bed is the last bed that John Booth slept in before his death. This bed is located at the home of Samuel Mudd.

That's a little surreal. In all the shambles following Lincoln's murder, who on earth thought to save that bed? I know we have some odd tourist destinations in our country. Largest ball of string, biggest pot hole, cars growing from the earth- but the bed of the germ who killed Abraham Lincoln? I'm not making a judgment on the post, mnor, you're just bringing it to our attention, it's just so odd!

Cool thread, @mnor . Should I find myself back in Galena over the next couple of months, I'll try to get some photos of the Grants' rooms.

What has always registered with me is how small the beds appear to be. Even if you weren't Lincoln-sized, the beds still seem teeny.

This is the death bed of Capt. Tod Carter at the Carter house, Franklin, Tennessee.

It is said that because Lincoln was so tall , they had to place him at an angle on the bed so that he would fit.

The average height of an American male in 1860 was 5'10" tall and it actually decreased after the Civil War.
