My go-to site....Handbook of Texas Online.....you might pick up some names and google them....

http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/pom02

And my alma mater: http://www.library.unt.edu/events/special-collections/tejanos-and-civil-war

And probably the best-known book on Tejanos in the war....http://cwba.blogspot.com/2011/05/thompson-ed-tejanos-in-gray-civil-war.html

There's also a thread somewhere here about the son of Gregorio Esparza, who was in the Confederate Army. Esparza was one of the Tejanos who died defending the Alamo.

Our member from New Mexico might have some regional references......

I'm interested in any information on the subject.Considering there were 20,000 Hispanics who fought I would think there would be a little more information out there but I'm having a hard time finding much.

I'm particularly trying to find info on Hispanics who were from the islands, (Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico) and their decedents. Also, information about the immigrants of Spanish nationality and their participation.

One could call David Glasgow Farragut Hispanic or Latino. Farragut's father was Spanish but his mother was not. At the time of the Civil War most people would probably consider someone whose father was Hispanic as being Hispanic. If one considers Farragut Hispanic then he was the first U.S. Navy Admiral and tied Grant as the highest ranking Union officer. Both Grand and Farragut got their 4th star on the same day, 25 July 1866. At the times of their promotions they were the highest ranking officers the U.S. Army up to that date. Remember George Washington was only promoted to General of the Army in 1876.

The NPS published a book a couple years ago on Hispanics in the Civil War as part of a series of books on people of color in the civil war. A very interesting series as I had no idea that any other groups were involved other than white and black Americans and European immigrants. I own a copy but I just can't lay my hands on it right now. It is different than the PDF link that you have above. I checked on the NPS website for you. They don't have it in stock anymore though it may still be in NPS bookstores. George Meade was born in Cadiz, Spain to American parents since his father was doing business there at the time, so I don't think he counts as a Latino. However, it is an interesting bit of trivia.

When I first learned Farragut's father was Spanish my jaw dropped. It was pretty exciting.
Both Farragut and his father's service would give them the right to call themselves Americans and a better term for Farragut probably would be an American of Hispanic decent. That said, most children with a Hispanic father who was born outside the United States and non Hispanic mother, would in the 1860s probably been considered Hispanic by many Americans.

This auction is long over, but this gentleman has a brief, but interesting history as a Hispanic Confederate Officer:

Confederate Uniform of Cuban-born Officer Lt. Francisco Moreno, who served with Beauregard and was killed at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 - wearing this uniform.

This uniform has one of the most intriguing histories of the Civil War as this uniform was worn by a gentleman from a prominent Cuban family. Lieutenant Francisco Moreno was one of a number of men of Hispanic descent who were part of the Southern Aristocracy that fought for the Confederacy. His father was the largest banker in Pensacola and his grandfather was a surgeon in the Spanish Army stationed in Pensacola. His great-grandfather commanded one of the Spanish colonies in Louisiana in 1778.

He was clearly connected to the upper echelons of the Confederate Army, not only serving with General Beauregard, but his sister was married to the Confederate Secretary of Navy Stephen Mallory, who was also from Pensacola. Moreno was mortally wounded, being shot through the legs while wearing this uniform at the Battle of Shiloh.

I think it would be the fact that they were citizens of the United States that would give them the right to be called American as a nationality, not their service.

Hispanic means someone whose ancestors were Spanish (nationality). One can be an American Hispanic, a Canadian Hispanic, a whatever Hispanic. It's not a nationality, nor is it a race. One can be a black, white, or Asian Hispanic.
On the other hand, one could be Mexican, Dominican, Cuban, all the central an South American countries and not be Hispanic if they had no ancestors that were from Spain. Pure Indian for example.

Farragut, by having a Spanish father, is of Spanish decent, making him Hispanic. He IS a Hispanic; a Hispanic American or American Hispanic.

When it comes down to it he was American plain and simple, just like all citizens of the USA should be recognized as but since this is the forum section about immigrants in the war I make the distinctions so I can learn more about Hispanic involvement in the ACW.

This is Civil War soldier Julian Rodriguez, a Californio. I don't know anything else about him! Can't really tell what that uniform is, either.
