Herbert Starkhouse, 1844-1926

Hello,
My gggguncle was Herbert Starkhouse and he served in the Civil War.
According to his obituary, in the Pacific Grove Daily Review
A native of Omar, New York, Starkhouse made a brilliant record in the Civil War and was a member of the local G. A. R. post at the time of his death.

I can't find any records of him in the Soldiers and Sailors System or the 1890 Veterans Census.
Can anyone help?

I tried a few searches in Fold3. I'm not that good searching Union records especially since Fold3 doesn't have all the records scanned---only 1 card for each soldier.

I searched for surname and got only 1 hit.

James H. Starkhouse, Private, Company A, 9 Illinois Cavalry

Then I found this in Google Books

James H. Stackhouse enlisted at Rock Island, October 31, 1861; mustered out November 1, 1864; address, Carroltown, Neb.
and another with same surname.
George W. Stackhouse elisted Rock Island, October 31, 1861; discharged November 14, 1862

I wondered if we had the correct spelling of the surname. Go back to Fold3 and searched for Herbert STACKHOUSE and got only 1 hit for all States out of 500 hits for just that surname.

Ok. That must be him. I found him in the G.A.R. records as serving there. I can't find him in the unit rosters, though. Any idea why?

Where did you get your roster? I search for rosters on Google Books with search for "Adjutant General Report New York Regiment" or include the unit ID. If you are lucky you may find a report with Rosters that give date of enlistment and date of Discharge/Death, etc.

Some Rosters that I find published in Adjutant General Reports will list Members of a company followed by Recruits. So make sure you have scanned the complete list as it may be divided into 2 groups, with recruits being those who were replacements. Also, many rosters are arranged by Officers then NCO's and finally Privates. You may know he wasn't an Officers so you look in alphabetical list of Privates and skip right over NCO's.
