Help with uniform

This character is, allegedly, James Murray- my wife's distant cousin- who was born in 1844. I can't definitively place him in the Civil War (it's a pretty common name), and the uniform doesn't exactly look CW; plus, the individual in question appears older than the 19 years he would've been at the end of the war...so, SpanAm maybe?

My namesake's son was in the Spanish American war and is dressed just like that. Let me see if I can find his photo.

Where are my belt experts? In the second photograph is this a Model 1885 Plate on a Model 1885 Belt or a Model 1887 Model Plate on a Model 1887 Belt? I vote for a Model 1885 Plate, but not sure of the belt. it may be a Model 1885 Plate on a Model 1887 Belt. Please call in an equipment expert.

I don't know but I did recognize the belt as SAW. I know an expert in town. He gave a presentation with examples of utility belts from SAW to Viet Nam and some variations.
