Help with uniform

Can anyone tell me anything about this uniform. Found this photo from my mothers side of the family. James Ellis Leftwich 1844-1921 is the gentleman in the photo. thanks for your help.

Hmm, at first glance I would have said frock coat, given the way it drapes on him.

It certainly does have the features of the jackets ascribed to the Richmond Clothing Bureau of the CS Army...namely the shoulder straps, lots of buttons in front, and looks like top stitched collar...

I agree but not being able to see the bottom its hard to say if its a type 1 or type 2 but it is indeed a RDJ

I also have him on the rolls of the 54th VA Co G enlisting on 9/1/63, which would most likely put that jacket as a type II.
