Help with Uniform Question

And some close-ups.

Again, just saying - I'm not entirely buying that the man in the middle here is either of the two gentlemen on either side. For one thing, the two soldiers have curly hair and beard and the middle man has neither. I don't think that generally changes with age. The nose seems completely different too, it hooks down instead of turning up.

I can believe both of those men are in their mid-20s, but I can´t make either one of them into a 45 year old man. I can believe both of them as newly-minted lieutenants from the clothes and the way they carry themselves. I´m still going with that Reeder ID as mistaken.

The man on the left is G W Reeder of the 22nd Ky and the man on the right is identified as James Garvin of a different regiment but both families were close. The picture below is a later photo of the man on the left (my main interest). I do wonder if the man on the right is Johnson Garvin, who was a nephew to James and closer in age to Reeder. Johnson and Reeder both served in the same regiment at the same time. Both were in their mid-20s while James Garvin was suppose to be 45 when he enlisted about 1863. This picture might appear in the Carter County, Kentucky historical book, I'm not sure but family members are the ones who have identified both men in the photo. This isn't my family, but just wanting to get a better understanding.

HUSKERBLITZ; OK, the G.W.Reeder is George W. Reeder.

You questioned if the soldier on the right might be Johnson Garvin; Nope. The record in the NPS site lists him enlisting in KY 22nd Infantry , Company D as a sergeant, later promoted to 1st Sgt. The record for him in CWData.com says he enlisted as a corporal, later promoted to 3rd SGT. While these records do differ, neither lists him as a commissioned officer. Thus, both Yanks in the pic are wearing officer's coats, but neither yank we have researched achieved officer's status, so the "identification" given for the photo is wrong for both soldiers.

Of slight further interest: The NPS sites lists both a Garvin, Johnson and a Gavern, Johnson listing them as alternate spelling for the same man; the records are almost identical. CWData got their info from the Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky, and I suspect that the NPS used the same source.

That´s a junior officer frock - field officer´s has a double row of buttons. They´re both dressed reasonably as junior officers in a Federal unit. I think that´s a bugle on the front of the kepi, so I´m gonna guess they´re infantry officers. It´s been a long time; I submit that he´s been misidentified over the years. It only takes once, then dozens of other sources just copy and paste. That uniform is properly fitted and worn correctly. I have no reason to suspect it´s not his.
So true about misidentified soldier's information just copied and pasted with no research. I've seen 3 misidentified soldiers pictures this week alone and it's only Tuesday! Research is key before any purchase.

Yeah, I research the regiment so I have all that info on both Reeder and Garvin and even a scan of a letter from Reeder during his time at Cumberland Gap.

But with family members suggesting the pic of them with odd uniforms, I decided to inquiry more about the likelihood of the picture being authentic.
