Y'all have helped me so much with my ancestors and I am really thankful for that. I need help with an ancestor named Hiram Dougal McArthur. He was born in Mississippi in 1830 and died in Mississippi in 1918.

A published work on the history of the 43rd Mississippi Infantry Regiment is found at the below Amazon link:

The 43rd Mississippi Regimen was the regiment that used camels. "Old Douglas" was their famous mascot which was killed during the bombardment of Vicksburg while they were under siege. He and several members of the regiment are buried in Vicksburg.

Who is in the photo of your avatar? What regiment is that? I'm interested in the 17th Mississippi and they wore a similar hat.

Did you have a relative in that unit?
I had a Gr-Gr-Grandfather and two of his brother-in-laws served in the 17th Mississippi.
I am starting to paint a miniature bust of a soldier in the uniform they wore at the outset of the war. One lady here in town has a photo of her ancestor wearing that braided uniform and top hat.

The 43rd Mississippi Infantry (called the 'Camel Regiment'. because it used a camel as its mascot), was a battle-hardened regiment with extensive combat experience during the Civil War.

I looked at the cards for Hiram McArthur and it says he was captured at Chickasaw Bayou on May 22, 1863. My gr-gr-grandfather was in the 43rd MS and was captured at the same place at the same time (records show either May 18 or May 22). Later records for McArthur give other locations for his capture so I don't know if they were together or not. My gr-gr-grandfather was part of a group of soldiers who were ill and left behind when the 43rd withdrew into Vicksburg.

That is really cool that our ancestors could have crossed paths or been friends during the civil war. Thank y'all for doing all the research.
