Anyone good at facial recognition? Trying to figure out if the man in the middle in picture 1 is the same as the man being pointed to in picture 2.
Opinions. These are the best pictures i have.

It could be a trick of the light, but it looks to me that the man in the lower photo has a face much thinner than the man in the upper photo. Also, I'm not sure that I can quantify it, but it seems like some of the facial features are different also. No, I don't feel strongly enough to disagree within

disagree with anyone having a different opinion.

One thing I notice is that the man in the lower picture has a badge on the front of his cap, which the man in the first picture does not have. The second picture definitely shows a man with a thinner face, but it could have been made in a different year (thus the weight loss.) Maybe if you told us why you're curious about these two men, some experts would have a better clue to help you track down your answer.

Even though these are not the best pictures for comparison, I think that these two images are probably not the same man, even if he had lost weight. Basing the comparison on facial features and bone structure, independent of the subjects' weight, first of all, the shape and relative width of the jaw. The gentleman on the right has a proportionally broad jaw with a bit of a retruded chin. The gentleman on the left has a distinctly narrow jaw proportional to the width of his cheeks. Regarding the cheeks and nasolabial creases: the man on the right has distinct nasolabial creases. The man on the left seems to have more prominent cheekbones and, even though carrying less weight, the nasolabial creases are not evident. And regarding the way the head is set on the shoulders - Judging from the pictures available, which may not be entirely indicative, the man on the right seems to have a short broad neck that inclines slightly forward from the shoulders. The man on the left seems to have a slender upright neck with no forward inclination evident.

They're similar but 2 things would convince me no, not the same. You don't really see someone that age changing their looks and preferences, you know? Men in photos have differently trimmed beards and different neck wear, too. My great grandmother for instance wore her hair the same at 40 ( according to photos ) as she did at 90. Can't see veteran #1 changing his bowtie for necktie then deciding it'd be more sporting to stop trimming his side whiskers, too. And doesn't his kepi have a badge while the other fellow's does not?

Having said that, happy to be wrong.

I did not think they were the same but it was a long shot. The one with five gentleman is dated 1914 and the picture at the monument is from 1888. They are both pictures of vets of the 143 PVI just 26 years apart. The man to the right with his hand over his heart is Gen Chamberlain. He was in Gettysburg for the dedication of the PA Monument and had commanded the 143rd at Petersburg so he took this picture with them at their monument. The man in question is Francis Furman b 1844 d 1924. We know that is him in the first picture, just don't know who everyone else is.
