We are about ready to reprint this mammoth classic!

https://tinyurl.com/3c7yu2kb

"Ninety-Eight Days: Geography, Strategy, Politics, and Command During the Vicksburg Campaign," by Warren E. Grabau (the original subtitle was "A Geographer's View of the Vicksburg Campaign," sort of a snore-fest).

Out of print for a couple of decades, Grabau's masterpiece is incredible: readable, fascinating, utterly original and jammed with 68 maps! You will never look at campaigns the same way, especially Vicksburg. Nothing like it exists, and as Ed Bearss told me, it is "the best single volume on Vicksburg, hands down." Specs: 68 maps, 728 pp., sewn binding, hardcover, d.j., proposed price: $44.95

We have been taking SERIOUS INTEREST EMAILS for a while, and we need another 20 or so orders to pull the trigger. HELP US--but please have a 95% certainty you will purchase the book once it arrives.

Send us an email at [email protected]. This is not an order. Once we go to press, we will email you details and then you can decide to purchase it.

PLUS, $5.00 of store credit after you get the book, so the price for this is peanuts.

I'd buy it.

I would only add that this one is highly valued for good reason. As I indicated, it's unique. It has voluminous maps showing the topographic, hydrographic, and logistical challenges faced by both sides in terms of what they knew and didn't know. The large scale of the campaign - geographically and from the standpoint of duration - makes this a great addition even if you have Bearss, Smith, Ballard, Miller, etc. If I didn't already own it I'd have signed up the moment SB announced. And Vicksburg is not one of my "obsessions". You can get some idea of these aspects of the campaign from the other books but none can present them as thoroughly and graphically as this focused book.

I probably won't buy it right away simply because of my 14-book backlog of Civil War books to be read in my current queue.

I think of it as literary ADD. I have way too many books going at the same time. I have actually been reading a book and thought "I should read a book about this subject!" . Sheesh.

I think this is one of those deals where one probably would be smart to get it now so one's not sorry later on.

I wouldn't have gotten a copy if @alan polk hadn't recommended it so highly.

I had a similar experience. When UT published it I hadn't heard much about the book but an acquaintance who was a Vicksburg aficionado pushed me to get it. I'm glad he did.

As a publisher, it is harder for me to find time to read for pleasure, but I always have three or four going at the same time, and have since my youth. ADHD is a superpower.

I try to keep it to not more than two - usually one in my car and one at home. That negates the possibility of forgetting to bring a book with me when I leave home. I also find books that are a physically larger (usually 8.5x11 rather than the common 6x9), especially softcover, are harder to read over lunch so I will often read those at home.

If a third book is involved it's usually something I've deliberately set aside to finish later because I need to finish another book for some kind of deadline, or I need a break the author's dry writing.
