Hey could y'all please help me research my ancestor? His name is Robert B. Holman and he was born in 1821 and died in 1893. He lived in newberry South Carolina most of his life. I want to know if he fought in the civil war but I can't find anything to support that. He supposedly fought late war with a local unit but I can't find anything to back that up. His son( my 3x great grandfather) was named W H Holman he was captain of a South Carolina regiment. I have already researched W H Holman I just need help with Robert Holman.

There was a Robert B. Holman in Co. C, 14th TN Inf. (CSA). He enlisted in Springfield, TN on 16 May 1861 but died of wounds received at Fredericksburg on 26 Jan 1863.

That's the only one with the middle initial of B.

There was a Robert Hallman (no middle) in the 57th NC Inf. and a Robert Hollerman/Hollaman in the 6th Battalion Texas Cavalry. I don't find anything closer among Confederates.

For the Union, there were Robert (no middle) Holmans (or phonetic equivalent) that fought for Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Oregon. And a Private in the 6th U.S. Colored Infantry.

I don't find anything in the records either. He wasn't always in South Carolina though - in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses he was living in Noxubee County, Mississippi. But I think he was in South Carolina during the War. He could have served in a local militia, which may not have left records. I see that a lot with older men.

And in the small world department, his son Robert Briscoe Holman married one of my cousins, Bessie Vawter. So you and I, @Historycollector61, are distant cousins by marriage!
