From NPS:

"6th Regiment, Alabama Infantry
OVERVIEW:6th Infantry Regiment, about 1,400 strong, was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861. Its twelve companies were recruited in the counties of Montgomery, Jackson, Autuaga, Lowndes, Russell, Macon, Henry, and Wilson. Ordered to Virginia, the unit was assigned to Rodes', O'Neal's, and Battle's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It was engaged in many conflicts from Williamsburg to Cold Harbor, moved with Early to the Shenandoah Valley, and ended the war at Appomattox. In April, 1862, it contained 1,100 effectives. Subsequently, it lost fifty-nine percent of the 632 engaged at Seven Pines and reported 156 casualties at Sharpsburg..."

Surviving records in fold3 say that he died in a Confederate hospital in either Petersburg or Richmond on July 1,1862. Most of the surviving records regard claims filed by Regimental Officers to collect back pay on his behalf and most are handwritten...hard to read.

As others have said, not much info.

That's extremely interesting but I do have him listed as living until 1915. Kind confused but thanks everyone for your help

Hmmm.... so there's two men with similar names but different fates. Let's try again.

So @bdtex is right that the Alexander Starling who was in Co. B of the 6th Alabama died in service. Which must mean that he is not your ancestor, if your ancestor lived until 1916. There is an A. H. Starling who fought with the 9th Alabama cavalry.

Can you tell us other facts about your great grandfather that might help us figure out the name his Civil War records would be under?

Here's one of the easier to read records:

Starling, Alexander.jpg

He's listed in a book called "Confederate Cemeteries, Volume 2" at page 391.

Y'all are awesome!!! Thank you so much!!!

One last question if you guys don't mind, is there anyway to find out how he died? Thanks again!!!
None of the records I saw in fold3 that I was able read said whether he died of wounds or disease.

The name Alexander Starling appears in only two census records. 1850 and 1860. That's it...nobody else by that name in Alabama.
