Help needed on researching CW names

Hello all! I see so much amazing info posted on a individual, when someone asks about a name. Question where is a good site to get this information ? I have several names I would like to research ( not any relation) it's amazing someone posts a name and in seconds (it seems!!) a reply is posted with entire history!

If it's military there is both Ancestry.com and Fold3.com (military records). But there are a number of free sites like the National Parks Soldiers and Sailors Database. It just kind of depends on the names and what they are in relation to.

The names are military mostly civil war. I will check these out thanks!
