At least 10 years ago I came across in the Official Records a report of Partisan Rangers led by O'Neil carrying out a raid. They had obstructed the tracks between Hancock, Maryland and New Creek and run a passenger train off the rails. They proceeded to rob the train of jewelry, watches, etc. and after making off as bandits, one remained behind a killed someone, and got away. I cannot find the source again. So far I have found the following references for activities in that time period of March 27-29, 1865.
March 15, 1865- A train carrying the balance of two regiments smashed up without injuries near Hancock, Maryland. [Series 1, Vol. 46, Part 2, p. 998].
Same date- A message from Col. Wilkinson at Clarksville W. Va. to Col. Enochs at Beverly, Va. stating a rebel prisoner advised of a raid was to be made on the 25th of the month.
In Series 1, Vol. 46, Part 3, p. 279 on March 29th, 1865 a message from Col. Wilkinson is sent to Major Augustus Dotze of a raiding party of six guerillas captured the mail from Beverly on the other side of Bellington the day before. Also reported to General Stevenson at Martinsburg a party of 25 guerillas had been in Smithfield, W. Va. and crossed the railroad at Summit Point headed to the Shenandoah.
Again on page 240-241, of the same date March 28th, 1865, Gen. Stevenson is told a raiding party of 30 to 50 guerillas had robbed the Post Office at Bunker Hill and some citizens 3 miles out from Stephenson's Depot, and they had been making destructive raids on the railroad in Maryland.
I can no longer find my notes nor the reference source I used when I began investigating this train robbery. It interested me for the fact it was an early plan of later train robberies used by Jesse James and his gang. Has anyone else found the report I speak of? It would help me greatly. Thanks,
Lubliner.
