Any idea as to what this cartridge box is? These are the only photos I have. Thanks in advance, Martin

Federal revolver cartridge box missing the two leather belt loops on the back and the leather tab that would have been sewn to the front to secure its closure with the brass finial. On the plus side -- it does have the tin container inside which is often missing. These revolver cartridge boxes are common since many ended up surplus after the war.

That is what I though at first also, but it is 7.5 inches wide, 5 inches tall, and 1.5 inches thick. Much too big to be a Federal revolver box.

Welcome From The Heart Of Dixie. With the measurements and the leather belt loops being sewn high up on the back, I going carbine cartridge box.

Now that we have the dimensions, it is most likely the 1839 carbine cartridge box but should have an inner flap cover which may be missing as well as the small oval pieces ("ears") of leather that were sewn to the cover to keep rain out. I have one just like that and they were made without the implement pouch. They were meant to accompany the Hall carbine. They did not have copper rivets on the belt loops and none on the cover to secure the leather latch tab that goes over the brass finial. There were several other carbines of this early period that this may have been used for besides the Hall carbine: Sharps, Symmes and Perry carbines.
