Hi everyone!! I found my very first civil war picture. I bought at a thrift store and would love to identify if possible. When I opened the picture behind it, there was another picture and think it may be soldier's child, not sure.

Can someone help?? Thank you so much for having this forum. I love it!!

Pretty certain this is post war, maybe even early 1900's. I know the crossed rifles insignia was only used after the ACW and his haircut is definitely not ACW era. Looks like some sort of militia or cadet uniform.... maybe a Citadel cadet.

Sorry I can not help you but, just wait a little while and someone else will be long..
Welcome to CWT from the Smoky Mountain side of North Carolina.

South Carolina; State National Guard... circa 1900-1910ish

Subject is wearing an 1895 "Undress Coat"... This was rather plain as compared to the "Full Dress" coat that had all the fancy buttons, trimmings etc... Both were in use during the time frame...

Here is a similar image of an identified Missouri State National Guard subject wearing the same style coat... with branch insignia and "MO" on the collar... (dated 1911) If regular army it would have had "US" instead...

I have been thinking about this photograph since it was first posted and here are some of my thoughts on it.

-Portrait most likely taken between 1890 and 1910.

-State Guardsmen from South Carolina and all states to the best of my knowledge, did not wear this uniform.

-This uniform is worn by military cadets.

-Military cadets do not wear branch of service insignia.

-This man is not a cadet at the Citadel. Notice the lack of collar insignia. See photograph posted below.

-This man might be involved with the Citadel in some capacity, but I don't know how.
