Hello, question about Atlanta campaign

Hello,

I have just recently found out that my Great Great grandfather fought in the civil war, with the 79th Indana infantry. He died in the Cumberland hospital in Nashville, June 3rd 1864. Around that time his unit was fighting in the Atlanta campaign, probably near New hope Church/Dallas and Picketts mill. He was shot in his left shoulder and died at the Nashville hospital of hemorrhaging.

I've been really trying to narrow down axactly where he was fighting.

Do you think it's feasible That he and other wounded were moved all that way to Nashville from Northwest Georiga? It's about 240 miles or so?

it's very exciting to learn about him, and I thank you for any help you can provide.

Welcome from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The rail line from Nashville to Chattanooga and from Chattanooga to the front was Sherman's lifeline and he kept it in good repair. Reinforcements and supplies went forward and the sick and wounded returned to the military hospitals at Chattanooga and Nashville.

The 79th Indiana fought in Samuel Beatty's (3rd) Brigade of Thomas Wood's (3rd) Division of O. O. Howard (IV Corps) of George H. Thomas' Army of the Cumberland during the Atlanta Campaign. The attached history of the 79th Indiana may give you a feel for the actions in which your GG-Grandfather took part.

Than you so much. I love reading about this and thinking of what it must have been like for him and his family back home. It's reassuring to know that they were able to take the wounded that far back to Nashville.

I was thinking once i have all the research that i would make memorial shadow box for him. do any of you all know if there were any standard medals issued to Civil war soldiers like a purple heart ect or for campaigns. just trying to think of things to put in it.

I don't think there were any government issues medals; I believe that began in later wars. There were some private medals issued by a few generals.
